As Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits the big screen, people right across the world are flocking in their thousands to watch it, with the population of Cornwall probably more excited than most.

This is due to the fact that Cornwall has the fifth largest number of "Jedi" in the country!

During the 2011 census, many residents located close to our Fowey restaurant identified the teachings of Jediism as their religion - 2,169 people in fact!

Cornwall was only behind Leeds (2,812), Brighton and Hove (2,636), Bristol (2,310) and Birmingham (2,238) for the amount of people who chose Jedi as their religion.

During the 2001 census, 390,127 people chose the way of the Force in their belief section, which accounted for 0.7 per cent of the religious choices in the UK, ranking it in sixth.

However, ten years later in the 2011 census, the number of Jedi had dropped to 176,632 and was in seventh place, with Buddhism and Judaism overtaking it.

This is not the only unusual choice on the census, as 6,000 people across the UK chose "Heavy Metal" as their religion! It will be interesting to see how these numbers fare in the next census, due in 2021.
