Fowey Royal Regatta week is underway
Written by The Cormorant Hotel
The Fowey Royal Regatta week started on Saturday and a whole array of events will be taking over the harbour town. When staying at our luxury Cornwall accommodation this week, be sure to take a trip to Fowey to see what's going on!
There is a full sailing programme and a carnival parade with a pirate theme. This is one of the major attractions of the week, where hundreds of people take part every year. This year the parade will take place on Wednesday 17 and there will be commentary by Johnny Cowling.
Taking off from Squires Field just after 7pm, it will make its way through the town, and feature many of the locals and visitors to the town dressed up in some fantastic costumes. It is not just the people who get dressed up either, as the shops and cafes will have decked out the store fronts in accordance to the pirate theme.
There is also the famous Giant Pasty ceremony on Thursday with the enormous pasty arriving by boat from Polruan, the Flora Dance, sandcastle competition, a crab catching contest and spectacular fireworks to be seen over the harbour.
There will also be live music events throughout the course of the week, up until August 20, including a performance from Cornwall's Britain's Got Talent semi-finalist Josh Curnow on Friday 19.
The different boat racing events are definitely a highlight not to be missed, with raft races on the harbour and gig racing along the River Fowey. There are also hundreds of sailing boats racing, including the Troys which have been built in Fowey. On the final day of the regatta, there is also the dinghy procession with a prize waiting for the best decorated boat.
Our luxury Cornwall accommodation, the stunning Cormorant Hotel on the banks of the River Fowey, is the perfect place for staying in Fowey, as you are able to enjoy all the local attractions as well as those a little further afield.
