enjoy Cornish gin at our boutique hotel in Cornwall

A Cornish gin has been named as the second best in the country in a new poll which featured over 50 gins that are distilled across the UK. Take the chance to sample the locally-made drinks when staying at our boutique hotel in Cornwall this summer.

Country Life magazine revealed Britain's best gin in its first ever Great British Gin Awards in London, and Tarquin's Cornish Dry Gin has been named as the runner-up, beaten to the top spot by Fifty Pound London dry gin.

Tarquin's Southwestern Distillery was founded in 2013 and is a family run company led by Tarquin Leadbetter. The company is at the forefront of craft distilling, handcrafting gin and pastis in traditional copper stills, based in Padstow.

Editor of Country Life magazine Mark Hedges said: "Gin has been through many ups and downs in its history and is now very much in high spirits. It is fashionable once more and small batch producers are springing up all over the UK. As arguably the most quintessentially English drink, it's absolutely fitting for Country Life to honour the best gins in Britain with the launch of these awards."

Tarquin's gin was very popular with the judges. It was praised for the aromas, from full juniper, citrus notes and a hint of sage. There was an agreement among the judges that the Cornish gin was clean and pleasant, perfect for a gin and tonic or to bring out the flavours of a cocktail.

Judges said of the Cornish Dry Gin: "This is a great all-rounder, well suited both to partnerships and for solo drinking, because of its considerable fullness and power. Above all, this was a gin we found fulfilling and satisfying in terms of the balance of aromas and flavours."

When staying at our boutique hotel in Cornwall, you can try Tarquin's gins at a selection of places throughout the county, as well as order their selection of gins online here.
