Wildlife walks in Cornwall

31st October 2014

With its calm, rural charm, Cornwall is well known for its spectacular countryside, which not only offers up stunning views of the surrounding scenery, but allows you to come up close with some of the wildlife and nature that the woodland and coastline has to offer. In the autumn in particular, the change in landscape brings out a host of new wildlife for us to keep our eyes out for. Here's a guide of the wildlife to look out for while exploring Cornwall, as provided by the Cornish Wildlife Trust:

Weddings and Fowey's beautiful scenery

30th October 2014

We often use this blog to talk about how beautiful Fowey and Golant are, and how the area surrounding the Cormorant is absolutely stunning. By letting people know just what a pretty part of the world we're lucky to be based in we feel like we're sharing something which is really too good to be kept secret. So when we see pictures of people having their weddings in the area it makes us really happy.

New harbour fee system in place

29th October 2014

Sailors weighing anchor in Fowey no longer have to come ashore to pay their harbour fees thanks to a new payment system. Sea farers don't have to hunt for change or even set foot on land to pay their harbour fees these days, thanks to the new 'afloat' mooring and payment system which was introduced at Easter. The system has proved popular as people can now pay their fees without leaving their own boats, thanks to harbour patrol crews equipped with iPads and chip and pin machines.

Great Fowey Bake Off shows town spirit

28th October 2014

Fowey's amateur bakers gathered together this week to take part in a bake off, showing the town's community spirit. The competition was held at local pub the Safe Harbour Inn and was judged by three-Michelin- starred chef Nathan Outlaw. Nathan, who was trained by Rick Stein, crowned Sam Tamblin the winner, with her delicious chocolate and banana cake beating off all-comers.

Cormorant waiter's penchant for paddling!

24th October 2014

We're lucky enough to be based in a beautiful part of the world here in Golant, and one of our members of staff is lucky enough to see that beauty from a different angle to many of us. That's because he's a member of Fowey River Canoe Club and gets to look at the banks of the beautiful Fowey Estuary from the water several times every week. Waiter Connor Peters has worked at the Cormorant for more than a month now, fitting in his canoeing around shifts in in the dining room of one of the best restaurants in Fowey (or perhaps he's fitting in work around his canoeing!).

Dramatic rescue by Fowey lifeboats

15th October 2014

FOWEY'S lifeboats and RNLI volunteers provided a reminder of why they're so valued by people who live and work in the town this week. Because Fowey is a town with such a strong link to the sea it's always had a lifeboat station, and everyone understands just what an important job the people who staff it do. So this weekend most people in the town were aware something dramatic was afoot when both of Fowey's lifeboats rushed out of the harbour on Saturday.

Crafty Cornwall's cider making course

14th October 2014

A local cider company has started running a course in how to make the delicious apple based drink! Crafty Cornwall is a company based in Fowey and it's started offering the chance to visit Fowey Valley Cider's brewery in Golant, the village where The Cormorant Hotel is based. The course is called from Apple to Barrel and the first one is set to take place this weekend. If it's a success, more will follow.

Win a weekend stay and dinner at The Cormorant Hotel

14th October 2014

We love to see new guests arrive at the Cormorant, and we love it when people get to see the beautiful sights in the area surrounding us. We also love hearing about all the fantastic things our guests get up to while staying with us here in picturesque Golant, just a few miles from the charming town of Fowey. So we've decided to give two lucky competition winners the chance to stay with us, enjoy dinner cooked by our fantastic chef Dane and enjoy one of the best local events of the year - the Fowey Christmas markets.

The celebrities taking up walking

7th October 2014

Walking has always been a popular pastime in the UK, but recently it's had a boost thanks to several celebrities taking it up as a hobby. Walking is good for the body, mind and soul - something we know only too well. We're lucky enough to be based in a beautiful location as one of the boutique hotels in Cornwall, where walking is a simple pleasure anyone can enjoy.
