Wildlife sightings from the Cormorant window

29th November 2014

Here at the Cormorant we're blessed to be based in such a stunning location and are lucky enough to get constant reminders of just how lucky we are. With the hotel sat on the wooded banks of the river Fowey we have stunning views from our hotel windows and all it takes is a glance out of one to remember how sweet life is here in Cornwall. It's not just the views that provide cheer either, as we see an abundance of wildlife which reminds us how close to nature the Cormorant really is. Yesterday afternoon we were given the perfect reminder of that.

Dazzling show at Fowey pop-up shop

27th November 2014

A pop-up shop has lit up Fowey this week with its dazzling display of reclaimed maritime lights. The shop, called Any Old Lights, is now operating on Webb Street and will open its doors to the public on every Friday and Saturday until February next year. Run by Mike Redmond, Sinead Hanks and Pat Fitzpatrick the shop sells lights which have been stripped from scrapped bots and ships, before being lovingly restored and refined. The finished articles look wonderful, and add a wonderful rustic finish to tastefully decorated interiors.

The nearby town of Lostwithiel is set to host a Dickensian extravaganza this Christmas. The town hosts its Dickensian Evening every year and it always proves a popular event - with this year expected to be no different. Thursday, December 11, is the date for this year's evening and despite the cold, the dark, and possibly the rain, it promises to be fantastic. Lostwithiel is lit up each and every year for the last ten years when the Dickensian evening rolls around, with the streets filled with crowds eager come to enjoy anĀ old fashioned traditional Christmas experience.

Fowey Christmas markets approaching

Although it may still seem some way off Christmas is actually less than six weeks away! That means there are even fewer days until the spectacular Fowey Christmas markets are upon us. The annual Christmas market sees stalls take over the centre of Fowey, with crowds flocking to the town to buy gift and goods from stall holders. Fine foods and drinks are always on offer while a range of unusual, quirky and luxurious gifts are also sold at the market - not to mention traditional Christmas fare.

Fowey history goes on sale

14th November 2014

A fantastic oil painting of Fowey painted by the famous artist Nancy Bailey is due to go on sale at an auction this week. Nancy painted hundreds of local views after taking up painting professionally when she reached her 50s - and carried on painting for 40 years before retiring once she moved into her 90s. Having sadly passed away a few years ago a few of Nancy's paintings have now come up for sale.

With its calm, rural charm, Cornwall is well known for its spectacular countryside, which not only offers up stunning views of the surrounding scenery, but allows you to come up close with some of the wildlife and nature that the woodland and coastline has to offer. In the autumn in particular, the change in landscape brings out a host of new wildlife for us to keep our eyes out for - especially here at the Cormorant.
